Brewer is part of the Bangor Metropolitan area and is named after its first settler, Colonel John Brewer. The sister city of Bangor, Brewer sits on the Penobscot River estuary and is roughly 2 hours north of Portland. The Penobscot river is the longest in the state and sections of the river contain some of Maine’s most challenging and breathtaking whitewater rafting opportunities, as well as sections perfect for smooth and easy paddling. Many outfitters in the area offer a variety of trips. The Penobscot also supports many game fish species, including brook trout, landlocked salmon, smallmouth bass, white perch, and chain pickerel. The City of Brewer offers economic opportunity with its urban location and access to an excellent highway network while maintaining its small-town appeal. Visitors can enjoy many local craft breweries.
